Often when you're trying to find information on the laws of a particular state the best place to start is state government websites. These will be far more helpful to you than anything else until you know more about your topic. A quick search of "death penalty" or "capital punishment" and "south carolina" site:gov in Google will give you a South Carolina state website with information on the history of the law in the state and also lists the number of executed inmates, methods of capital punishment, and recent developments in the law.
To find out more, go here: http://www.doc.sc.gov/pubweb/news/deathrow.jsp
Look at the additional results of your search for more state government sources. Once you've looked at these, use our JSTOR database, which has scholarly law articles, and can be accessed here: http://library.tctc.edu/databases
